All Ages and Abilities!
Here at the Tannery School of Music lessons are geared towards the musical interests and specific goals of each student, providing a personal and unique experience.
Students 4-8 years of age
Young children have brains like sponges and it’s our goal to make sure they soak up as much knowledge as they can. Everyone’s learning process is as unique as their fingerprints, which is why our curriculum is catered to the individual’s needs. Some students enjoy theory while others take to learning by ear, but no matter how a student finds his or her way we are committed to helping them get there.
Instrument options for students 8 years old and under:
- Djembe (African drum)
Students 8-13 years of age
Being motivated is the best way to achieve a goal, but finding it can be hard unless you’re having fun. So how does one have fun with music? By playing it! We all want to express ourselves and feel good about our accomplishments. I don’t know about you, but Ode to Joy or Frere Jacque doesn’t speak to my heart nor does it make me want to show off my skills to all my friends. That’s the same reason why teaching the music your child wants to learn keeps them motivated and having fun while building up those cognitive skills. Whether it’s the Beatles or Michael Jackson, Evanescence or Bruno Mars, we can break the song down to whatever level the student is comfortable with. For example, teachers can play along with students filling in the parts that the student has yet to learn while still allowing the music to sound like a full song. As the student gets better and better, the teacher plays less and less.
Instrument/Lesson options for students older than 8 years of age:
The internet provides so much information these days that anyone can Google a couple of chords, or watch a how-to video on YouTube, so we encourage you to do just that! We can accelerate your learning by using a few tricks of the trade from teachers who are also performers. We can coach you on everything from how to come up with your own style, to stage presence. Once you feel comfortable we can hook you up with other students to form a band so that you can play your own gigs!
Looking for something to do on your lunch break or after work? Come join our growing community of adult students and learn to play the instrument you’ve always wanted. There’s no such thing as being tone deaf or rhythmically challenged. Many people born before the 80’s were told this myth which discouraged them from learning music as a child. It’s too bad but never too late.
Instrument/Lesson options for students 13+ years of age:
- Song writing
- Recording arts
Lessons are once a week for either 30 minutes or 1 hour. Private lessons are $23/30min.
